For Muslims to Regain Lost Glory

22/02/2010

Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. My question goes as follows: From all what is happening to Muslims since World War I till now, is there any hope for a Muslim revival and stronghold? Of course, Allah and His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) have told us that a day of reckoning would come but the future seems so dark and bleak for Muslims. I am not saying this because of Western and Jewish crimes against Muslims.

I am saying this because of the so-called moderate Muslims who side with the West against other Muslims. The attitudes of such turncoats sadden my soul. So my question is: Why do these Muslims side with the West even after history clearly shows that they are our bitter enemies and is there any hope for the Muslims worldwide? Jazakum Allah khayran.

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, we are greatly pleased to have your question and we appreciate the great confidence you place in us. We implore Allah, Glory be to Him, to help us fulfill the task of conveying message to others in a way that will please Him, He is Most Gracious, All-Knowing.

In these times, Muslims should be faithful to their religion in order to regain their lost glory. They should establish Islam firmly in their hearts and demonstrate Islamic manners in public life so as to become good examples for other. They should also seek knowledge and science, abhor injustice, and realize that their glory and supremacy are in being close to Allah and applying His commands.

Responding to the question, the eminent Muslim scholar Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, states the following:

Some scholars claim that the Doom is approaching and that the darkness looms large and there are troubles on the horizon. Actually, such premonitions bring benefits to none and make things get worse. This leads to the belief that there is no hope for a change or reform and that the coming days carry nothing but bad events. This is, in fact, a very wrong way of thinking and it is plainly a pessimistic approach to life. Muslims are to stick their mind to many glad tidings of the coming victory of Islam, and they should have faith in Allah that the coming days will be more bright and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Thus, it is necessary for Muslims to derive from the following glad tidings glimpses of light to fill their hearts with and let despair vanish and fade away.

Here are some of the glad tidings mentioned in the Qur’an:

1.Almighty Allah says:(He it is who hath sent His Messenger with the guidance and the Religion of Truth, that He may cause it to prevail over all religion, however much the idolaters may be averse.) (At-Tawbah 9: 33)

2. Almighty Allah also says: (Fain would they put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light however much the disbelievers are averse.)(As-Saff 61: 8)

In these verses, Allah makes it clear that at the end sweeping victory and triumph will be for Islam and Allah’s light will cover all corners of the globe.

The Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is also a record of many hadiths that give glad tidings of the coming victory of Islam. Here, we would like to cite some of these hadiths:

1. In hisSahih, Imam Muslim recorded that Thawban quoted the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) as saying:“Almighty Allah has gathered the earth for me so that I could see all its corners. My nation will rule over all that which Almighty Allah has gathered for me.”

2. Ibn Hibban quoted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying: “This matter (i.e. Islam) will spread to cover all areas where there is night and day. Allah will never leave a house in a rural area or in urban community without its people being Muslims. Honor is for those who embrace it (i.e. Islam) while disbelievers are doomed to disgrace and humiliation.”

This hadith, along with many others, give us glad tidings that the patch of the Muslim state will expand to cover the whole earth and that the strength of this state will grow and become obvious to all. This also denotes good news for the long-cherished hope of revival of Muslims’ unity and rebirth of Islamic Caliphate.

Also, there are many other glad tidings in the reality of being a Muslim, for any wise man knows that no falsehood is to remain forever. Life has its ups and downs and days have their own vicissitudes. After hardship comes ease and every cloud has a silver lining. The bitter reality of the Muslim Ummah will come to an end, and tomorrow will be definitely better than today.

The emergence of the Islamic awakening has breathed in the Muslim nation a sense of confidence and hope in the future. Viewing this awakening as a threat, the enemies of Islam have tried their utmost to suppress it. However, it is Allah’s will that the Muslim awakening will endure all tribulation without being affected. Such movement is worthy of leading the Muslim nation to utter victory once there are leaders who are rightly guided by Almighty Allah and filled with wisdom.

However, we’d like to make it clear that, based on the notion “Nothing comes from nothing”, all those glad tidings, stressed in the afore-mentioned fatwa, will not materialize unless Muslims themselves stay firm on the divine path set for them by Almighty Allah. This is the fact further elaborated on by the eminent Muslim scholar,Dr. As-Sayyed Nuh, professor of Hadith at the faculty of Shari`ah, Kuwait University:

The only solution for this Muslim Ummah is to be back to the fold of faith, to return to Allah obediently, to follow the guidance of the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This actually serves as a necessary provision for Muslims in their march towards victory. It is the responsibility of every Muslim to build his personality following the guidance of Islam, to adapt his life to the actual teachings of Islam. It is high time for us to turn unto Allah and declare our total surrender to His will, repent to Him and seek His forgiveness. It is time to wage a war against sin and disobedience, to reject the mischief and to eradicate the very feelings of cowardice and corruptions from our hearts.
It is important for the whole Muslim Ummah to adopt every possible means of acquiring deterrent factors that will shun away aggressions and put an end to injustice. First and foremost of these means is unity, for unity is the source of power. In the Qur’an, we are enjoined to seek all possible means of being ready for Jihad at any time. Almighty Allah says: (Make ready for them all thou canst of (armed) force and of horses tethered, that thereby ye may dismay the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others beside them whom ye know not. Allah knoweth them.) (Al-Anfal 8: 60)

Also, it is the duty of the Muslim Ummah to be armed with patience, for patience is an unfailing weapon. This patience is to be wrapped with planning and ceaseless work for the betterment of the future of all Muslims. Thorough studies and researches are to be conducted to find out where the problems lie and how to solve those problems. Along with this sincere process of rectifying, we should never give up du`a’, imploring Allah to shower us with His mercy and grant us speedy victory.

As for the reason why Muslims are lagging behind, we should ascribe this to our negligence. In the Qur’an, we read: (And was it so, when a disaster smote you, though ye had smitten (them with a disaster) twice (as great), that ye said: How is this? Say (unto them, O Muhammad): It is from yourselves.)(Al `Imran 3: 165) We should ask ourselves, “What have we offered to humanity through the past hundred years?”

After gaining independence, many countries in the far corners of the globe embarked on campaigns of reform and started a new phase of advancement and progress. For many Muslim countries the case is different. Instead of working hard to achieve progress, Muslims tend to rely on others. Needless to say that a person who cannot earn his living, cannot make his own decision freely. We are to blame for all what is happening to us. In the meantime, the solution is in our hands, to rectify the fault and make our first steps towards victory.

In conclusion, as we strive hard to rectify the situation, we should never allow despair to creep into our hearts. Yes, what is happening is sorrowful and heart-bleeding to all: lands usurped, children orphaned and women rendered widowed, due to atrocities perpetrated by the enemies of Islam, but we shouldn’t lose hope in Allah. We would like to cite for you the following Arabic lines of verse:

There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

And joy, for man, is an end of sadness.

Why feel despair, as you always hear.

That Yusuf gained kingship after years in prison.
